So lately, I’ve been reading a lot of articles. I guess it’s because I’m trying to expand my knowledge, or I’m just naturally hungry for it. I don’t know. Yesterday, I had a question about time zones. It came up during an argument about the shape of the Earth, and someone brought up time zones. And I said, wait, why does Nigeria have one time zone? Is it purely out of convenience? So I went down a not-so-deep rabbit hole and found that while I’m partly correct, convenience is not the main factor in deciding time zones. Geography plays a role too. Then there’s politics. So think of these like twins: time zones and solar time difference. Now, there is a real time difference across different states in Nigeria, but it’s not enough to count as a full time zone shift. Nigeria spans approximately 11 degrees of longitude, and if you remember from geography, one full time zone is about 15 degrees of longitude. That means the solar time difference across Nigeria is roughly 40 to 50 minutes, which is not significant enough to justify a separate time zone within the country. So this is why Nigeria has one time zone. Now, there’s a caveat. If Nigeria were to expand significantly from east to west, then yes, a time zone split could become reasonable, depending on how large that spread becomes. So why should you care? No moral. It's really just for your information. You're welcome.
