It's so easy to get carried away building someone else's brand, that you don't ever get to build yours. And when I say carried away, I don't mean being distracted from building yours. I mean relaxing too much because you think building another person's brand is enough for you. No, it's not.
Let me tell you why.
It’s their brand, so no matter how much energy you put in, the ultimate decisions, the vision, and the rewards belong to them. They only share those with you. You can contribute and play a role, but you don’t control it. You’re playing within their own rules and goals.
But when it’s yours, every choice made directly affects you. So, it pushes you to be more accountable. This alone makes you care. The pressure to make sure things are right is what forces growth and creativity.
Also, there's a high level of satisfaction and fulfillment you get from building something that is directly yours.
And above all, ownership changes everything. The benefit is more than just financial. You learn to think bigger, smarter and take responsibility fully.
So, don't only focus on building for others, build for yourself too. And I'm not just talking about starting your own business, I'm also referring to making investments or building partnerships.
But there's something important you need to know. While working on other people's brand, you must treat theirs with the same energy and responsibility you’d want for yours. If you put real effort into their projects, you’re practicing the skills, discipline, and decision-making you’ll need for yours later.
When you do this, everyone benefits. The person whose brand you’re building gets top-quality work, and you gain the experience, skills, and mindset to grow your own brand. In the end, it’s a win-win.
Work for others to fuel your personal growth and take that into building your brand.
