To make progress in 2026, this is what matters right now and what you should be focusing on if you are in any of these stages.
Stage 1:
If you’re just starting out, the biggest mistake you can make is trying to do too many things at once. Learning a bit of this and that, then dropping everything halfway.
What you should focus on is one solid skill and stick with it long enough to get good. You can't be perfect at it, so just be good enough that people can trust you with real work.
Consistency matters more than speed at this stage.
Stage 2:
If you’re already building something, don’t get distracted. This is not the time to add new skills or chase new ideas.
You already have something that works, even if you haven't gone very far in it.
What you should do at this point is get better at it and put real effort into finding more people who need that exact service. More clients, more use cases, more repetition. That’s how you get results.
Stage 3:
If you’ve been building for years, this is where things change. At this point, you shouldn’t still be operating as a solo person doing everything yourself.
It’s time to expand your skill set strategically, scale your work, and take on bigger brands/opportunities.
You can’t do all that alone. So, you have to build a team. That's what will allow you to handle more work, make more money, and grow without burning out.
The main thing here is for you to be doing the right thing for your stage. Don’t rush ahead, don’t lag behind, and don’t confuse movement with progress.
