We say “We need affordable housing!” But what most people actually mean is: “A fancy duplex, on a minimum-wage budget.” And that’s the bifocality...👇 We want fast, cheap housing, but when presented with the solutions, materials, technology and the choices to achieve this, we (un)consciously resist them. In fact, we agree that alternative solutions is the way to go... But only for others. For us, it's the large mansion with the tallest roof. Now, taste is not the issue. Culturally, a Nigerian home is identity, status, legacy, achievement... All rolled into one. However, the problem is when it doesn't align with economic realities. You see... 👉 Infrastructure. Macro-economics. Financing. Skill & technical know-how... These are the first hurdles for housing supply; developers, manufacturers and investors. But after navigating these.. Suppliers MUST supply ONLY what the market wants... "identity, status, legacy, & achievement" or go bankrupt. If people won't buy... Your factories, loans & investment = Wasted. This is why even the best affordable solutions fail. Alternative solutions make economic sense ➡️ But conflict with cultural preferences. Meanwhile, these preferences don't match economic realities. Unlike building methods or materials that providers could workaround, (because demand justifies it), the market does not instill enough confidence to make any alternative "workaround" worth it. Until we fix the system, and align our preferences to our realities, we’ll keep having the same "this vs that" debates that solve nothing. So, are we truly ready for affordable housing or want to keep waiting for miracles?
