It’s the weekend and somehow I’m thinking about Benford's Law. Wild. The idea is that in real life data, numbers have a pattern. On the scale, the number "1" appears way more often as a first digit than anything else. And that’s how experts catch fraud. A notable example is the 1 cent thief. I suggest you check it out; it's an interesting story. Research states that human beings do not have the ability to truly fake numbers (like in accounting), because we have a biased view of numbers. But I'm thinking: what if seasoned thieves know about, or are studying Benford's Law? Just a thought. If I wanted to be honest though, I think that a lot of people don't study much lately so we may not have to worry about large, "expert" thefts. Lol. But this is my takeaway: not everything can be faked cleanly. There’s always a trace, because underneath (almost?) everything are numbers. Isn't that cool?
